Preservation & Facilities Coordinator

Reports To: Executive Director & Director of Operations
Position: Full-Time, Hourly, $23.50/hour

Schedule: Saturday-Tuesday 7:30 AM – 5:30 PM  

 

Position Summary

The Preservation & Facilities Coordinator helps maintain the Tybee Island Light Station & Museum's historic buildings, grounds, and visitor facilities. This hands-on position supports preservation projects, routine maintenance, site operations, and visitor readiness to help ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming experience for all guests.

 

Essential Responsibilities

  • Assist with the preservation, maintenance, and repair of historic buildings, exhibits, furnishings, and grounds.

  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs, including basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and painting.

  • Awareness of the Secretary of the Interior's Standards.

  • Complete daily opening and closing procedures, including monitoring building systems, utilities, and security alarms.

  • Maintain clean public and staff areas by performing routine housekeeping tasks such as cleaning restrooms, emptying trash, and sweeping.

  • Assist with seasonal landscaping, grounds maintenance, and site appearance.

  • Work safely by following OSHA guidelines and organizational safety procedures.

  • Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and other staff on maintenance and preservation projects.

  • Support exhibit installation, special events, parking operations, and other site activities as needed.

  • Monitor visitors while working on the grounds and help ensure compliance with site policies.

  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the museum's mission.

 

Qualifications

  • Experience in facilities maintenance, construction, preservation, or a related field is preferred.

  • Basic knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, or general building maintenance.

  • Ability to safely use common hand and power tools.

  • Willingness to learn historic preservation techniques and standards.

  • Dependable, organized, self-motivated, and able to work independently and as part of a team.

 

Physical Requirements & Schedule

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physically active work, including standing, walking, climbing stairs (must be able to climb the 178 steps in lighthouse), and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.

  • Full-time, hourly position with regular weekend work, holiday work, and occasional evenings for special events.
