The Tybee Museum was established in 1961 by The Tybee Island Museum Association. The Association is now known as The Tybee Island Historical Society, a non-profit organization which also operates The Tybee Island Light Station in addition to the Tybee Museum. The purpose of the museum was the same in 1961 as it is today - to interpret the rich history of Tybee Island.
The Tybee Island Historical Society mission statement is as follows:
The mission of the Tybee Island Historical Society is to preserve, store, and exhibit artifacts, documents, photographs, and other documentary materials relevant to the cultural and natural heritage of Tybee Island and the preserve, develop and promote the historic resources of the island.
The Tybee Island Historical Society supports, maintains, and manages the Tybee Island Light Station and Museum and hold it in perpetuity for future generations.
